The issue has been inflaming debates in all media for some time. First of all, it must be said without a shadow of a doubt that electronic cigarettes are less harmful than the traditional cigarette, starting with the fact that there is no tobacco combustion. Aspirating burnt tobacco, as well as chewing it, is a leading cause of death from smoking-related cardiovascular and pulmonary problems. From this point of view it is possible to say that electronic cigarettes are healthier than traditional ones, and can be a valid help to quit smoking. However, the problem that many detractors focus on concerns the use of e-cigs among adolescents: some studies have exposed the problem that many young people trying the electronic cigarette, then switched to the traditional one. These studies, however, fail to concretely explain the reason for this step, since tobacco and its derivatives are easily accessible everywhere.

Some related studies on the effects of the e-cigarette

In 2017 it is the first long-term study was released on vaping, comparing exposure to toxic substances among ex-smokers who switched to e-cig in a 16-month window with those who continued to smoke. The results showed an actual reduction in carcinogenic and toxic substances between the two groups, but only in the vapers had they completely stopped smoking. A further study compared toxins in vapor and smoke that can cause cancer. Most of the available data shows that the cancer risk from vaping is around 1% compared to traditional smoking. To conclude, in 2017 it was also released a study of over 60,000 adolescents and their relationship to vaping, the largest of its kind so far. The results show that many try these products, but use among teens who have never smoked is less than 1%. Let’s analyze what the liquid for electronic cigarettes is made of :

  • Propylene glycol

It is a solvent used to dissolve substances in liquids, it is used both in the pharmaceutical and food fields, it is not carcinogenic.

  • Vegetable glycerol

It is used for syrups, creams and cosmetics, as well as as a food additive, it is not contraindicated even in pregnancy or breastfeeding.

  • Waterfall

The water used in some liquids for electronic cigarettes is double-distilled water and does not exceed the ratio of 10% compared to the other components.

  • Food flavorings of natural origin or chemical synthesis

They are the flavor concentrate in the liquid and are obtained by extraction from natural raw materials or by chemical synthesis, for example a concentrated tobacco flavor could be obtained from the extraction or maceration of tobacco leaves.

  • Nicotine (if any)

Nicotine is not carcinogenic , it is addictive, but you don’t die of nicotine. In small doses, nicotine increases heart rate and blood pressure. Nicotine also extends the positive effect of dopamine on mood and causes an increase in the production of beta-endorphins, thus having a relaxing and stimulating effect on the body. In high doses it causes nausea and vomiting. Keep in mind that an average pack of cigarettes may contain around 13 / 16mg of nicotine.
